READING:
A controversial British artist, Jake Chapman, has said it is "a total waste of time" for children to go to an art gallery. He also said other things that might make parents and children angry. He said parents were "arrogant" for thinking children could understand art. He said showing a child art was an "insult" to the artists. Mr Chapman said it was the same as telling the artist that their art is "as moronic as a child". He also said: "Children are not human yet."
Chapman has got the art world talking. One artist said we feel art, not understand it. He said: "Feeling comes before understanding." A London gallery said children benefit a lot from looking at art because it "widens their horizons". The BBC said Chapman just wanted to get the media to give him more attention. He has an exhibition, so if the artist says something crazy, the press write a lot about them and ticket sales for the exhibition go up.
