The Reading / Listening - Paris Agreement - Level 5

World-famous CEO and inventor Elon Musk has left his position on Donald Trump's business advisory council. He recently defended his role as advisor to the U.S. President. His decision to quit was because of Trump's announcement that the U.S. will pull out of the Paris Agreement. This is the climate deal set up to deal with greenhouse gas emissions and signed by 195 countries. Mr Musk tweeted: "Climate change is real. Leaving [the] Paris [Agreement] is not good for America or the world." Another prominent figure, Disney CEO Bob Iger, will also quit the advisory council.

President Trump has constantly backed the fossil fuel industry. He believes that leaving the Paris Agreement will ease business restrictions and promote growth. Trump's supporters say leaving will help to revitalize the coal industry and create jobs and revenue to what was a profitable industry. However, world leaders condemned the withdrawal. France's president said: "There is no plan B on climate, because there is no planet B." The world is on an irreversible trend towards cleaner energy. Leaving the Paris Agreement may limit the USA's influence in environmental issues.
