No African country will meet goals to end childhood malnutrition by 2030. The goals were part of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. They were, "to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all". A new report identifies poor child nutrition across 51 African countries. Many African countries are struggling to feed children. A researcher said the goal of ending childhood malnutrition was a hopeful target and, "is very, very far away".
There was some good news. The report highlighted many African nations that improved childhood development since 2000. However, the story in sub-Saharan countries is sad. Malnutrition remained "persistently high" in 14 countries between Senegal in the west and Somalia in the east. Many of these countries have experienced war, famine and mass migration. Investment is needed in health and infrastructure to address "serious inequalities".
Back to the malnutrition lesson.
