South Africa 1 Mexico 1 (11th June, 2010)

The first World Cup game on African soil has ended in a 1-1 draw. Hosts South Africa took on Mexico in an exciting contest in Johannesburg’s Soccer City Stadium. The whole game was played to the deafening sound of thousands of vuvuzelas – the horn all South Africans have to will on their team. The first half was all Mexico. It was all one-way traffic as the Mexicans launched wave after wave of attacks. They will be scratching their heads at how they didn’t score. After a goalless first half, South Africa’s Siphiwe Tshabalala broke the deadlock in the 55th minute – 1-0 South Africa. The roar from the crowd must surely be the loudest sound ever heard in Africa. Mexico’s Rafael Marquez equalized 11 minutes from time to deny South Africa a fairytale start.
