Uruguay 2 Germany 3 (10th July, 2010)

Germany clinched third place in this exciting match against a very spirited Uruguay side. Either team could have won but it was Germany’s youth who finished stronger against the South Americans, who tired at the end. Both teams played like it was the final. Germany opened the scoring when Thomas Mueller tapped in a Bastian Schweinsteiger shot that bounced out of the goalkeeper’s arms. That put Mueller in with a chance of the Golden Boot. Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani equalized 10 minutes later with a superb shot into the bottom corner. Things were level at the break. Diego Forlan put Uruguay 2-1 up on 51 minutes with an acrobatic volley. He was now on five tournament goals and a Golden Boot contender. Marcell Jansen popped up at the far post to head in a corner to level things again on 56 minutes. Both teams had chances in the final 30 minutes but it was Sami Khedira’s 82nd-minute header that won the match for Germany.
