Chile 1 Spain 2 (25th June, 2010)

Spain kept their nerve in the face of a possible World Cup exit to beat a tricky Chile 2-1. They had some help along the way from the referee, who sent off Chile’s Marco Estrada just before half-time. Spain were already two up by then. The first was a 40-metre lob from David Villa, who saw the goalkeeper out of position; the second was a beautiful finish from Andres Iniesta after some great interplay with Fernando Torres and Villa. The Chileans took the game to Spain after the break and scored two minutes into the half – a Rodrigo Millar strike deflected over Spain’s goalkeeper Iker Castillas. This set up a nerve-wracking final 45 minutes for Spain as 10-man Chile pressed for the equalizer that would mean they top the table. Spain held on to set up a last-16 clash with Portugal. Chile’s reward for finishing second in the group table is an appointment with Brazil.
