Ghana 1 Australia 1 (19th June, 2010)

Australia hung on for a 1-1 draw against Ghana in spite of playing with ten men for most of the match. They should have had a penalty in the first few minutes when Harry Kewell was brought down in the box. They went ahead in the 11th minute when Brett Holman pounced on a goalkeeping error. Australia looked in control for the first quarter of the game. Ghana had little in response to Australia’s creativity, except to stop the game with non-stop fouls. Everything changed mid-way through the first half. Kewell was red-carded for handling the ball on the line – his arm got in the way of a close range shot. Asamoah Gyan sent Aussie ‘keeper Mark Schwarzer the wrong way from the penalty to level the scores. Both teams had chances to score in an exciting second half.
